Why should I consider a body lift?
A body lift improves the shape and tone of the underlying tissue that supports your fat and skin. In addition, a body lift can improve a dimpled skin appearance and cellulite.
There are many reasons for men and women alike to consider body lift surgery, including:
- Sagging abdomen due to age and gravity.
- Correcting a low, flat or unevenly shaped buttocks.
- Correcting groin and inner thigh sagging.
- Significant weight gain or loss.
- Body changes due to pregnancy or previous surgeries.
It’s important to note that a body lift is not a substitute for exercise and is not a weight loss solution. Body lifts are not intended to remove excess fat. Liposuction alone can remove excess fat deposits. In cases where skin elasticity is poor, Dr. Brou may recommend a combination of liposuction and body lift techniques. Additionally your body weight should be stable prior to receiving a body lift and women should complete all child bearing activities prior to receiving a body lift.
What happens during a body lift?
Incision length and pattern will depend on the amount and location of excess skin to be removed. A complete lower body lift treats the buttocks, abdomen, waist, hips and thighs in one procedure. A circumferential incision around the body removes an apron of excess skin and fat and repositions and tightens tissues.
Deep support sutures within underlying tissues help to form the newly shaped contours. Sutures and/or skin adhesives will be used to close your incisions.
How much down time should I expect with a body lift?
After surgery, a dressing will be applied to your incisions and you may be wrapped in an elastic bandage or compression garment to minimize swelling and support your body as it heals.
A small draining tube may be placed under the skin to eliminate excess blood and fluid that accumulates. You may be unable to stand fully upright until internal healing is complete, which can take a week or two.
You’ll be given instructions on how to care for the surgical site and drains, what medication to take and what concerns to look for at the site or in your general health. Please plan to have someone drive you home following your procedure.
The final results may be initially obscured by swelling and your inability to stand fully upright until internal healing is complete. This may take a week or two, however once the swelling has subsided you should enjoy a smoother, firmer appearance and profile.
What can I expect as a result of a body lift?
The results of a body lift are visible almost immediately although swelling will also occur. However, it may take as much as one to two years, or more, for the final results of the body lift procedures to fully develop. Body lifts are permanent procedures; however proper diet and exercise to prevent weight gain are recommended to maintain optimal results.
Are there any risks associated with a body lift?
A body lift is a surgical procedure, and therefore risks are always involved as a result of receiving anesthesia as well as the procedure itself. Dr. Brou can help assess your unique health needs and advise you of any concerns to be aware of prior to undergoing surgery. Potential risks associated with a body lift include, pain, swelling, irregular contours, skin or nerve damage, infection, blood clots, fluid accumulation, scarring, bleeding or asymmetry.
